Ice Hockey

There are several arguments where hockey started, Nova Scotia, Northern Europe, England. Hockey as we know it today probably came from Field Hockey that has been around for centuries in Europe. J.G.A. Creighton a Canadian devised the rules of modern day hockey in 1875.  MontrealCanada was the site of the first game with Creighton’s rules. The first ice rink that was mechanical refrigerated was built in 1876 at Chelsea, London, England it was called the Glaciarium. Canada is Hockey’s home where amateur hockey was being played as early as the 1850’s

team, the Portage Lakers was formed in Houghton Michigan in 1903. NHL was founded in 1909 in Montreal,

in 1912 professional teams were allowed to compete for the Stanley Cup. The Stanley Cup has been awarded since1893. The Montreal amateur athletic association won the first two Stanley
cup competitions.

They Stanley cup is named after the governor general of Canada who in 1893 donated the permanent trophy to be awarded to the best hockey team.  The governor’s name was Lord Stanley of Preston. The cup was a silver bowl inlaid with gold. This original cup was worth abut $ 48.57

Ice Hockey is played with a frozen 3” X 1” piece of Vulcanized rubber called a Puck.  There are 6 players on the ice at one time from each team, unless there is a penalty, five players and one Goalie.  Players and on ice officials all wear ice skates.  The object of Ice Hockey is to put the puck into the opposing teams net (Goal) that is placed at opposite ends of the rink.

The goal is guarded by a special player called a Goalie.Players use sticks with long handles and most have a curve at the bottom. The part that is curved and touches the ice is called the blade.

Players move the puck back and forth to each other (Passing the puck) until it is in the opponents zone and shoot the puck using the stick to put the puck past the goalie and into the net. Players may also use their skates and body to redirect the puck. When redirecting with the skate there can be no kicking motion. Players may not bat the puck into the net using their hands.

Equipment has become a big part of Ice Hockey since it is a full contact game. Ice Hockey can be a dangerous game, pucks can move at speeds over 100 mph and body checks are legal. Protective equipment is used now in all levels of Hockey. Helmets with protective visors, shoulder pads, elbow pads, protective gloves, mouth guards, shin pads, chest and neck guards are used as well.

In general the characteristics of the game are the same wherever it is played. The rules may change depending on the Code of Play being used. The two most important codes are the National Hockey League (NHL) and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

Hockey is a very fast and exciting game to play as well as to watch. The rules can seem complicated at first but it doesn’t take long to understand the basics.

The fast pace of players skating up and down the ice and knocking each other in to the boards with shoulders and hips keeps your interest.
